Art Final

First Drawing (1)
Second Drawing (1)
1. Between the two pictures, I feel like I have learned a lot in art 1. In the first drawing (left), it was just a sketch, and no dimension, and the hand looked a little limpy.  In the second drawing (right), the hand was had dimension that was created by burnishing the pencil marks. It also had a lot more contrast than the first drawing, and was more full and non-limpy.

3. My most successful project was the useful sculpture project. For this project, I decided to make a bowl, but with the design of an owl on the front of it. I was inspired to make this bowl from Pinterest. I has seen multiple owl things all over and thought they were adorable and would fit very nicely in the decor of my room. I feel like this is my most successful project because of the colors I used in order to create contrast and make the details pop.

4. The project I feel that I could improve on was our water color paintings. For this project, I decided to take a different spin on a typical painting, and mix the water colors with bubble soap. What I did not like about it turned out, was how the colors were not as vibrant and I would have liked them to be.  I also was not completely fond of how it turned out more like a splatter painting instead of having the bubble shapes. What I could of done differently to make the painting more how I would have preferred was to probably use dish soap instead of bubble soap so that it would have been easier to create bubbles.

7. The media that I liked working with the most was the chalk pastels. With chalk pastels, you get very vibrant colors that are really easy to blend. Although they are messy, because they can be easily burnished, your colors still look like what you wanted them to. An example of mine where I used chalk pastels was our land/sky project. For this project, I did a NYC skyline. I burnished a whole bunch of colors in order to get the unique blues and oranges that I used in the skylines.

8. In our decorative sculpture project, we had an open choice of media. For this project, I decided to use my sport as my inspiration.  I took one of my old bowling balls, filled in the finger holes, and glued playing marbles on it. Having an open media was very effective for me because I was not restricted to using on thing at a time and I could think outside of the box in order to create something that loved.

Artists Collaborate

While doing our sculpture projects, I had the opinion of another student in a different class to help me with coming up ideas or to see if it looked good. The feedback she gave me was that she liked the progress I was making with both sculpture projects. She really liked the final result. By getting another student to give me an opinion, it made me a better artist because they gave me critique by saying what they liked and don't like.

Something that inspired me for our second sculpture project was the fact that I'm a bowler. I had a few old bowling balls left over that I wasn't using and saw on Pinterest that you could glue marbles to the ball and get a really cool garden sculpture. Someone that helped me understand important information about doing this project was the person who owned the pro-shop at the bowling alley. He had done something like this with his kids over the summer and told what I needed to do in order to have a successful turnout.

Artists Take Risks

For this project, I chose to do a bubble painting. This is where you take bubble soap and mix it with water color. It didnt work out as well for me, mostly because I chose to do it on a day where it was really windy outside. Because it wasn't working, instead of just putting it aside for another day, I decided to do splatter paint with the bubble and water color mix. I really liked how my project turned out.

Because I chose to use bubbles instead out just watercolor or acrylic paint, it was something different that I was not used to. I feel like it broadened my horizons when it comes to mediums that I can use  while painting.

I also got the little kids I was babysitting to do a project of their own.

Artists Create Original Art

Like most artists, everyone comes up with their own unique ideas. In my artwork, this has been a little difficult for me. I am not one of those people that creativity comes easily to. I am a very scientific and logical person, therefore, it takes a lot for me to be creative. In my first major project for Art 1, I drew an eye that was supposed to have a nebula in the iris part of the eye. I soon found out that drawing a nebula or a galaxy is incredibly difficult. My inspiration for this drawing was something that I found off of Pinterest. In the end, the drawing ended up as a mush of colors and looking nothing like a galaxy.

My sources of inspiration were multiple pictures and drawings of nebula's and eyes with different designs in the iris'. I used the eye drawings to figure out the kind of shape that I wanted to draw the eye. In my opinion, I came pretty close. I used the nebula's for what I would draw in the iris of the eye. I looked up multiple pictures and drawing and tried to combine multiple of them for a unique look. I wanted the drawing to be colorful, yet simple at the same time, almost to mimic my personality.

Overall, my drawing did not turn out how I planned it to turn out, but that is just all part of the process. I feel that when doing something artistic, you can't plan it out, which is a huge difficulty for me. You just have to let it go with the flow, which I feel was my problem with this first project. I thoroughly thought out what I was going to do and I ended up not liking it at all.

Artists Develop Art Making Skills

For this project, I decided to draw the New York city skyline. When drawing this, I used both oil pastels and chalk pastels. However, about 95% of the art is in chalk pastels. I found that with chalk pastels, I was able to burnish the colors together better. With oil pastels, they are very hard to blend, therefore, you don't get a unified look and when trying to create different hues of colors, it was very difficult to do so with out it looking incredibly messy. With chalk pastels, you can get more details, its easier to blend, and is easier to fix when you mess up than it is with oil pastels.

This was the first time I have ever used both oil and chalk pastels. After experimenting for a while, I found that it was easier for me to use chalk instead of oil. Before hand, I had always used the basics (colored pencils, crayons, etc.) If ever gotten the chance, I would definitely use chalk pastels again. I feel that I would need to experiment more with oil pastels until I understand how to use them a little better.

Overall, I like how my art turned out. I feel like I accomplished the purpose of this project. I found out which pastel I preferred to use, which is most definitely chalk.

Artists Communicate Through Their Work

For these projects, we had to do one that showed emotion (color project) and one that showed our own personal style (style project). I decided to focus more on the style project.

For the style project, I decided to focus on Salvador DalĂ. He is a surrealist artist who was famous in the mid 20th century. The painting that I decided to focus on is his Spring Explosive painting.
I feel that this painting shows struggle with the people running in the background and the flowers looking somewhat like bullet wounds and the dark clouds in the sky. I think that it also shows signs that happiness is nearby and that things will get better.

For the color project, I took my inspiration from a painting that I found off of Pinterest.
I feel that this painting represents happiness. I also love this painting because it resembles the ocean.

The only issues I am having with these projects is coming up with ways on how to execute the techniques that we have learned into ways that it makes the final look good. I have started to experiment with watercolor and layering the blues and other colors to achieve a look that I am happy with. So far, it had not been working well for me.
